Provision a server
A greneIT server is a managed Ubuntu virtual machine (VM). It runs your applications, such as WordPress or Nextcloud. Plans come in sizes such as Sprout, Tree and Forest.
Open Servers in the left-hand menu. The table lists your servers with their Plan, Location and Status. Each location is labelled Renewable energy or Not renewable.

Order a server
Section titled “Order a server”The Provision a server form is on the right. You can also click Provision server on the Overview page.
- Server name: lower-case letters, numbers and hyphens, for example
my-green-site. - Location: choose where the server runs. Locations labelled Renewable energy run on renewable power.
- Plan: pick a size. The price is shown next to each plan. If you see No plans for this location, choose another location.
- Ubuntu version: leave it on the latest LTS unless you need an older one.
- Carbon telemetry: choose Server — all HTTP traffic on this VM to measure this server’s emissions, or None. See How emissions are measured.
- Click Create server.
- Check the Confirm server subscription pop-up. It shows the pro-rata amount for the rest of this billing period and the recurring price. Click Approve and provision.
If you have a card on file it is charged immediately. Otherwise you continue to a secure Stripe payment page and then return to Servers.
Your server appears in the list straight away. Its status changes to ready when it has finished setting up, which usually takes a few minutes.
